The best solar size is based on your electricity consumption, usable roof area and future needs—not simply the biggest capacity the installer offers.
Start with your electricity units
Take 12 months of bills, note the units (kWh) used and account for summer peaks and seasonal demand. Use the interactive solar calculator to test example output.
Compare sample solar system prices
| Capacity | Demo installed price | Central CFA | UT top-up | Illustrative effective cost | Yearly bill savings |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 kW | ₹1,74,000 | ₹85,800 | ₹9,000 | ₹79,200 | ₹10,000–15,000* |
| 4 kW | ₹2,29,000 | ₹85,800 | ₹9,000 | ₹1,34,200 | ₹13,000–19,000* |
| 5 kW | ₹2,82,000 | ₹85,800 | ₹9,000 | ₹1,87,200 | ₹17,000–24,000* |
*Savings depend on consumption, JPDCL tariff, generation, roof shade and net-metering. Demo price is not a vendor quote. Subsidy eligibility, disbursement and timelines require confirmation.
3 kW: sensible mid-size
A practical option for some moderate-use households, especially if annual consumption supports it. In the demo model it costs ₹1.74 lakh before subsidy.
4 kW: extra headroom
Suitable for larger electrical demand and potential future use. Under the subsidy scheme, however, the central CFA does not increase when you move beyond 3 kW.
5 kW: higher generation potential
Useful where roof space and real annual consumption justify extra capacity. Oversizing simply to chase a larger subsidy does not work because the scheme cap remains at 3 kW.
Roof and electrical checks
Confirm structure safety, shade-free area, solar module dimensions, inverter matching, cable routing and utility requirements. Actual generation varies with sun and roof design.
