One of the most confusing parts of rooftop solar is the electricity bill after installation. A net meter records what you draw from the grid and what you send back.
The difference between generation and savings
Solar output is not the same as bill savings. A system may generate electricity at noon when nobody is home; surplus energy can be exported only under the approved grid connection and settled according to the prevailing billing rules.
How the process usually works
Consumers register through the official program, choose a permitted installer, receive feasibility and technical approvals where required, have the plant installed, and complete inspection and meter commissioning. Ask who pays for the meter and who submits each document before accepting a quote.
Why bills may not become zero
Fixed charges, minimum charges, import/export accounting rules, seasonal consumption and solar output determine the final bill. Your rooftop has shorter generation hours in winter than in summer, and system shading matters.
What to ask your installer
- Which DISCOM process applies to my connection?
- Are metering and inspection fees included in the quote?
- Will I receive commissioning proof and monitoring access?
- How will export credits appear on my electricity bill?
