Knee pain can start after a twist, a long walk or with no obvious event. Here’s how to judge your next step.

Start with the pattern

Note the location, timing, swelling and activities that bring pain on. These observations are often more useful than a vague pain score.

When to arrange a visit

Persistent discomfort, recurrent swelling, locking or movement limitations may warrant assessment. A clinician can decide if examination or imaging is appropriate.

When not to wait

A visibly deformed knee, inability to bear weight, serious trauma, or a hot red joint with fever needs urgent attention.

Preparing for a consultation

Bring older scans if you have them and list what you have tried, including medicines and home exercise.
